Exploration 3: Literacy Event- Jireh White

As you may or may not know, I currently work at a vet clinic in Delaware, Ohio. In addition to being new, I am the youngest and most inexperienced out of all of my coworkers. With that being said, I think it is safe to say that I have a lot to learn. Everyday at work is a new learning experience for me. Last week, I found out that one of my coworkers resigned from her position and that I would have to take over one of her tasks. In this situation, a literacy event was used because she typed down all the steps for me to complete the task that I was given. Along with seeing steps typed out she also went through the entire process with me and showed me how to do it correctly. My coworker and my boss emphasized the importance of the task at hand and answered all the questions I had about what I was supposed to be doing. This example of  a literacy event taught me how to effectively take instruction and follow the directions I was given. I think this example is relevant because it is an example of learning new and taking on new responsibilities in everyday life.

There are many types of issues that we deal with on daily basis and over a long period of time. One type of issue that we have all dealt with before is an issue of evaluation. This type of issue breaks down the reasons behind why we do certain things and if they are morally correct. This type of issue is important because it allows us to take a step back and assess what we are doing and decide if it is a good thing to do. When we allow ourselves to be in a state of evaluation it helps us stay grounded and be more productive with the things we do. If we are not aware that something we are doing is not beneficial to ourselves and others we waste time and are not as effective as we could be. With issues of evaluation, it allows us to reassess ourselves and what is beneficial and desirable in each situation.
One issue that is important to me as a young citizen is college tuition. This type of issue is an issue of policy. In my opinion, people differ on this issue because they believe that putting yourself through college is a part of the challenge during the college experience. This issue is important to me because I feel that everyone deserves the right to an education. A lot of people do not have the financial abilities to pay for the education that they deserve. The cost of college tuition is at an all time high and this prevents many people from going to college. Today in our society, everyone is expected to have a degree in order to get good jobs. Without having a degree it can be difficult to find a job that supports a life with kids and a family. If you don't have a good job you are not financially able to pay for your tuition or your kids tuition in the future; it is a vicious cycle. Free tuition would be preferable, but I know that is not the most realistic option. However, I do believe that it should be accessible to everyone in various financial situations.
Knowledge is priceless. College is pricey. They should compromise.

  1. I also agree that people with certain financial issues should get free tuition. It is not fair for people that are in the higher class or even middle class to just be able to go to college. Everyone should be able to attend college no matter how good or how bad their finances are.

  2. I agree with you one hundred percent. Education is something that should be earned by our society instead of bought by our society. In some cases, really bright individuals aren't getting the proper education they deserve simply because their wallet isn't big enough, and that should not be the case.
